Embrace the Magic of an Autumn Wedding: Tips & Ideas for planning your autumn wedding

I know most people rave about Summer (and yeah, I like the warmth and sunshine too - so I do get it), but I can’t help but love Autumn. It’s my favourite time of year, and not just because it’s my birthday!

I love the vibrant colours as the trees start to change, the slight crisp chill in the air, the cosy jumpers, and being a countryside girl - the sights, sounds and smells of harvest will always have my heart.

With September and October now clocking almost as many dry or warm(ish) days as Summer months, and nature putting on its finest show for free, why not let the season’s charm inspire your special day?

If you’re keen to capture the essence of those cosy “ber” months for your big day, here are my top tips to help you plan an unforgettable autumn wedding:

1. Embrace Autumn’s Colours:

This is an easy one to start with. Autumn is a great way to incorporate warm tones like burgundy, burnt orange, deep reds, and earthy browns into your wedding palette. These hues radiate cosiness and romance, perfectly mirroring the seasonal spirit.

You can consider using natural elements such as pinecones, acorns, and autumn foliage in your décor to create a captivating atmosphere too. You could enlist your florist to source these (ideal if you’re short on time or prefer to leave it to the experts). But if you’re working with a tighter budget or love a good DIY project, a little woodland walk can be a fun way to gather your own decorations (just go careful with the glitter if you’re blinging them up - no one wants craft herpes for life!).

2. Dress to Impress:

Brides, why not opt for wedding dresses with long sleeves, delicate lace, embroidered vales that add pops of colour or warm accents like a faux fur stole or a stylish cape? These additions not only provide warmth but also add elegance and a dash of autumn charm.

Grooms, you can get in on the seasonal vibes too with tweed or textured suits. Pair these with deep, rich-coloured ties or bowties for a stunning effect. Don’t be afraid to embrace the rustic appeal - grow that magnificent beard if you want to!

3. Let your venue do the work:

Choose a venue that showcases the stunning autumn backdrop: think countryside manors, rustic barns, or intimate woodland settings. The natural surroundings will effortlessly enhance the magical ambiance of your day.

If the weather’s on your side, consider an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception. Your guests will be captivated by nature’s glorious hues - and if you book a celebrant (nudge nudge, wink wink) the combination will make your wedding truly unforgettable.

4. Photography Fun:

The soft, diffused light of autumn is perfect for capturing stunning photographs. Talk to your photographer in advance to get ideas for how you can make the most of the golden hour—the hour before sunset—for dreamy, romantic shots in the beautiful outdoors.

You don’t need to stick to the run of the mill posed shots either. Capture the essence of autumn by incorporating props like umbrellas, cosy blankets, or even a playful jump into a pile of fallen leaves?

5. Seasonal Sips & Tasty Treats:

Warm, spiced beverages such as mulled wine, hot cider, or pumpkin-spiced cocktails are delightful choices for autumn. Treat your guests to these soul-soothing drinks as they mingle and celebrate your love.

An autumn wedding is also a great excuse to crack out the delicious treats like caramel apples, toffee-laden desserts, or rich, comforting pies and crumbles. Your guests will savour the cosy indulgence.

6. Favours and Decor:

Delight your guests with personalised mini bottles of homemade sloe gin or apple-infused liqueur as wedding favours. These thoughtful gestures are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Incorporate autumn-themed elements into your décor like fairy lights draped within trees, seasonal flower arrangements, and charming pumpkin centrepieces. Think beyond the bright white table linens too - stepping outside the standard wedding box and picking table cloths, plates and cutlery that blend with your theme can elevate the look and feel of the space.

In short - the possibilities are endless. An autumn wedding offers unrivalled beauty and a truly magical atmosphere. Experimenting with vibrant colours, creating a cosy ambiance, and adding seasonal touches will make your special day a standout. So embrace the charm of this romantic season and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
